BIOGRAPHY
Professor Siew Woh Choo, PhD, FRSB, is a Cambridge-trained geneticist and a leading global voice in pangolin conservation. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (UK) since 2023, he contributed to the NIH-led international ENCODE Project. He is a Professor at Wenzhou-Kean University and a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Pangolin Specialist Group. He is also founder and chief scientist of the International Pangolin Research Consortium, and founder and director of the Zhejiang-Malaysia Joint Laboratory for Rare Medicinal Resources.
His team produced landmark pangolin whole-genome resources, established a multigenerational captive-breeding research system for a species long considered extremely difficult to breed under human care, and helped clarify the scientific evidence on pangolins and SARS-CoV-2. They also showed that pangolin scales do more than protect: they carry antimicrobial and immune-related functions. Building on this, he pioneered wildlife-free substitutes with antibacterial, antibiofilm, and anti-inflammatory activity, offering traditional Chinese medicine a path that spares endangered animals.
He has published more than 90 papers in journals including Nature and Genome Research, with over 8,000 citations, and holds at least 13 patents. As principal investigator, he has led approximately RMB 20 million in research funding, including from the National Natural Science Foundation of China's International Young Scientist Fund and Malaysia's High Impact Research Fund and Cradle Fund programs. He has also been selected for several Chinese regional talent programs, including the Ouyue Haizhi Program and the Wenzhou Global Elite Recruitment Program. His work is moving conservation from reactive rescue to science-driven intervention, creating value from biodiversity without consuming it.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
Professor Choo’s research spans bioinformatics and omics, with four main focus areas: (1) bioinformatics and genomics; (2) modernization of traditional Chinese medicine, developing drugs for infectious diseases, cancer, inflammation, and immune-related conditions; (3) pangolin conservation; and (4) development of functional products.
